Recent changes have been made to the F-gas Regulation in Europe, which aims to reduce the use of greenhouse gases, including hydro fluorocarbons (HFCs): on 12 March 2014, the European Parliament voted to support a European Commission proposal to cut the use of hydro fluorocarbons (HFCs) to 79% below average 2009-2012 levels by 2030.

Solution description

Novec™ 1230 is part of the 3M Novec product line and is specifically designed for fire suppression, electronics cleaning, conformal coatings, surfactant applications and more. The fluid is a fire exstinguisher that can be widely used in Aerospace, Aviation and Military, Data Centers and Telecommunications, Marine, and Oil and Gas industry. Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid is a highly efficient fire extinguishant that can be used to keep high value equipment safe and functional (e.g. electronics and communications systems), as well as to protect valuable items stored in archives and museums (e.g. rare books, paper documents, archival film and video, antiques and works of art, etc.). Extinguishing via its cooling effect, the fluid works as a gas, yet it is a liquid at room temperature. Unlike most common halons and HFCs, Novec™ 1230 is a highly fluorinated ketone containing no chlorine or bromine and can be defined as one of the most sustainable choises for clean agent fire protection for it is featured by:

  • Zero ozone depletion potential
  • Five-day atmospheric lifetime
  • A global warming potential of one
  • A large margin of safety for occupied spaces


Novec™ 1230 products are innovative chemicals designed to face business concerns in terms of human safety, performance and the environment. Not only does Novec™ 1230 fluid meet today’s regulations, but it also has zero ozone depletion potential and the lowest atmospheric lifetime for chemical clean agent alternatives: 5 days compared to 29 years for the closest halon alternative. Furthermore, Novec™ 1230 fluid has a Global Warming Potential of 1, which is 99.9% lower than any halocarbon agent acceptable for use in occupied spaces. In addition, systems using Novec™ 1230 fluid allow for more efficient use of space compared to inert gas systems. As a result, Novec™ 1230 is not affected by the changes in F-gas regulations, offering one of the most viable, long-term and sustainable alternative to traditional HFCbased solutions. Novec™ 1230 products do have unique environmental features, but also provide space saving opportunities (fewer cylinders), lower cost of transportation and maintenance that translate into significant cost reductions. Forecasted sales for Novec™ 1230 fluid is expected to exceed $60M in 2018.
