Dow is renowned for its ability to respond to market needs and legislative demands through advances made in the technical capabilities of its STYROFOAM™ extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation. These advances include the launch of a new generation of thermal insulating boards, XENERGY™, which have better insulation performance thanks to the addition of infra-red blocking particles to scatter and reflect heat radiation within the foam board. XENERGY™ sets a new standard for the market. The result is reduced heat transfer during winter to keep a building warm, as well as in summer to keep it cool.

We know that there has long been a desire for improved lambda values, that’s to say an improved insulating capacity of a product designed for thermal performance. Customers, such as Architects and investors, want more effective insulation performance that uses reduced thickness of materials and offers greater design possibilities.

The development of XENERGY™ is a direct response to the market requirement. The addition of infra-red blocking particles within the extruded cell structure of the product is an innovation in the marketplace worldwide and places Dow Building Solutions on a trajectory to gain better competitive positioning. To achieve this, Dow scientists had to overcome the challenge of incorporating IR-blocking particles into the cellular structure without destroying it. The result of an extensive R&D project was a material which has a perfect close cell structure with the lowest water pick up for an insulating material, improved mechanical properties and most importantly, a significant improvement in thermal insulation.

XENERGY™ products use carbon dioxide as the main blowing agent - the Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) is zero and the Global Warming Potential (GWP) is less than five. Concern about ozone depletion in the stratosphere has led to international agreements to phase out the use of ozone depleting chemicals. All XENERGY™ products are hydro chlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) free and comply with the requirements of EC Regulation No 2037/2000 (1 October 2000) on substances which deplete the ozone layer.
